Manila, Philippines – Controversial drag artist Amadeus Pagente, better known by the stage name Pura Luka Vega, was apprehended by officers from the Manila Police District (MPD) in Sta. Cruz, Manila yesterday afternoon.
Pagente was served with a warrant of arrest issued by Presiding Judge Czarina Villanueva of Manila RTC Branch 36. The arrest took place at his residence on Hizon Street in Barangay 339, Sta. Cruz, at approximately 4:10 PM.
It has come to light that Pagente was an employee of the Department of Health (DOH).
He is now set to face charges related to immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions, and indecent shows, in accordance with the Revised Penal Code. The charges stem from a viral video in which Pagente was seen performing a dance routine to the tune of the “Ama Namin” (Our Father) prayer, bearing a resemblance to the iconic Nazareno procession.
A bail amount of P72,000 has been set for Pagente to secure his temporary release pending trial.
Pagente, who gained notoriety on social media due to the said video, has sparked debate and discussion around the intersection of freedom of expression, artistic interpretation, and religious sensitivities in the Philippines. His arrest has added fuel to the ongoing dialogue on these complex issues within the local community.
The case is expected to draw significant attention, not only for the charges but also due to its implications for the broader discussion of artistic freedom and cultural expression.
